Moving On....

I've been wanting to stop back and write a post for sometime and let you all know why I am no longer writing Frugal Indy. In May, we packed up the moving van and headed 2400 miles north west to British Columbia, Canada.

I plan to leave the blog up for the time being as there are still those of you who like to visit to get recipes that are posted here.

I am thankful for those of you who I met though the Frugal Indy website and the Savvy Saving classes! It was a real pleasure meeting so many wonderful Hoosiers!

We are enjoying the beauty of the Northwest! I just wish there was a CVS around here!

I hope that you will have a wonderful Easter. Easter is the celebration of the resurrection of Christ. It is the basis of the Christian faith. As we read in I Corinthians, without the resurrection of Christ there is no hope for us. Praise to God that Christ is risen and we celebrate that today!

I Corinthians 15

But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen:

And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.

Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.

Thrift Store Finds - all for $12

One of my favorite places to shop are the local thrift stores. I was excited when I read in the paper that a new Salvation Army Family Thrift Store just opened at 8310 East Washington Street. I decided to go over and check it out yesterday.

I found that the store was packed with merchandise and that the clothing was well priced. I was able to get all the items pictures below for only $12.

One of the keys to reducing your family's clothing bill is to look for items BEFORE you need them. If you wait until you need the item then you might have to pay full price.

I do not think my son's winter items will fit next year - so I went ahead and got him the next sized coat and snow pants. The blue coat is a very nice Land's End coat that I paid only $3.50 for the yellow coat was only $1.50. It is more worn than the other but will make an excellent play coat. The Snow pants were only $1.75

This tie is 100% silk and looks like it was never used. This was only$1.25.

Our VCR decided to start eating tapes a few weeks ago and so it was time to replace it. I found
one that looked nearly new for only $4. The top was a little dusty - but that was easily fixed. Thankfully it works great!

I Did NOT fall off the Planet!

I know you've figured that I fell off the planet right? I've had a few of those weeks where life takes over and blogging has to go on the back burner for awhile.

One of the things I've been doing is massive Spring Cleaning!!! I've also been totally inspired by Thrifty Decor Chick (Sarah) and have done a bit of updating with some paint. I only found her blog awhile ago and I love her ideas.

Here is an item that I have been working on during the past few weeks. I show you the wonderful new look in a few days. This in an old cabinet that we found in the barn of our first home, it was so dirty and old that it looked like it should go into the trash! I gave it this paint job MANY years ago and am now tired of the look. We use it to hold videos inside and our VCR goes on the top.

Below are some of the pictures that got me motivated to give it an update.

These pictures are from the Thrifty Decor Chick's website and are projects that Sarah did. I LOVE the coffee table. In fact, I bought a coffee table this past week at Goodwill for under $20 and did a redo on it! I'll show you that soon too - I think it looks great!

Muncie Children's Museum - Free Saturday!

Backing up Photos and Saving Money on Electronics or other Large Purchases

Yesterday started with my computer informing me that it had indeed recovered from "A serious error". This is not the way to start a day off right! When I tried to sign on, the mouse was not working, and then I noticed that the computer was not recognizing my battery back up which was plugged in - even though the computer said it was not.

I called the tech support and thankfully got a tech who knew how to help - not all techs are created equal! After a few tests we determined that most likely part of the mother board had stopped working - the part that runs the USB ports. The computer was not recognizing any USB port.

Off to Staples I went and got a $30.00 USB card for the PCI expansion slot. I am not a high tech person, but installing it was an easy 5 minute job. Thankfully the computer loaded the 5 new USB ports and worked once again - but now the screen was PURPLE. Ugh. I guess the computer is trying to tell me that it is on life support and hasn't much longer to boot up.

I decided to then go and do something the cheap gene in me has been resisting. I would go and finally buy an external hard drive to back up the 3 years of my family's pictures and the countless documents that are housed on my computer.

I say it is the cheap gene - because it is not frugal - just plain cheap to put your precious photos at risk buy refusing to spend $100 to back them up!

I looked and found what I would buy on the Best Buy website. I checked the store inventory online and it was in stock. So, off to Best Buy I went to get the hard drive. When I got there, I found the external hard drive was priced $20 above the online price. Double Ugh!

I asked an associate about the discrepancy and was told to just go to Customer Service and they would honor the online price. So, I was very thankful I had taken a few minutes to check the item online before coming to the store and that I had asked for the lower price.

I learned a valuable lesson. Before going to a store to make a larger purchase - check the online price and even competitor's prices to make sure you get the best price. If the store price is higher ask for a reduction. I have gotten price matches from competitor's prices at Best Buy in the past also.

A note about backing up photos. I also recommend backing up all your photos to a site out of your home - like Artscow. If your home was to have a fire and your PC and external hard drive were lost you would then still have your photos. It is not hard to do and well worth the peace of mind knowing that your memories are safe.

IMCPL Book Sale 2/11-13/10

This weekend is the IMCPL Book Sale. They have added a new Thursday sale day. The sale will be open 2-7:30 on Thursday. I think that it would not be busy right at 2 because most people are working or at school.

Friday from 12-7:30 is the 1/2 price day and Saturday is the $5.00 a bag sale! The sale will be from 10 -4 on Saturday. Expect it to be busy in the morning!

IMCPL Book Sale 2/5-7/2010

This weekend there is a Library Booksale at the Library Services Center. This is a great place to find books for yourself or your children.

I like to have books available for the kids to look at, and if I've only paid .50 or $1.00 for the book, I don't feel bad if a page or two gets ripped while they develop a love for books.

Muncie Children's Museum - Free Family Night

Just about an hour North East of Indianapolis is the Muncie Children's Museum. This is a fun, small, family friendly museum. It is a nice change from the very large Children's Museum of Indianapolis where we normally go. My son loves it and asks often when we can go again!

Disney Store Closing - Greenwood Park Mall

I was able to get this pretty little dress for only $15.00. The retail price is $49.50. As you can see, my little girl was very pleased with her "Princess" dress. If you get one of these dresses - they seem to run a bit small. My daughter wears a 24 months and this dress is a 2/3.

She was very excited that it matched her dolly's dress!

An added bonus is that our floor is now "sparkly" - even without mopping =).

The Children's Place Warm Winter Pj's - $3.99

Today I happened to be at the mall running some errands and stopped into The Children's Place. There was a huge sign saying 50% off the lowest marked price on clearance and so I had to check it out.

I found my FAVORITE winter pj's for my daughter for only $3.99 each. The regular retail is $12.50. I also found some of the lighter weight pj's for only $3.47 each!!! I bought the next sizes to put away for next winter and the following Spring. I also got an extra pair for this year as I never seem to be able to quite keep up with the laundry!

She was more than happy to do a little modeling of them tonight before she went to bed.

I checked on their website and they have them there too for the same price and shipping on all orders is only $5.00. You can go here to view the page with the pj's. There was a lot of other nice clothing on sale too for very good prices.

When you are able to buy ahead then YOU are choosing the price you will pay for an item. If you wait until you need an item you will have the price dictated to you by the store. This is one of the basic principles of my money saving philosophy - Choose Your Price. I choose $3.99 now - not $12.50 later.

Yes, I have to store it for a year until next winter - but I have a box in my daughter's closet (and an under the bed box in my son's room) for just this sort of thing, so that is no problem. I am always looking for things I will NEED (not just want) in the future and trying to purchase them at their lowest price ahead of that need. This strategy will save you a lot of money - as long as you stick with buying things you NEED and not buy a lot of stuff just because it is on sale.

Great Clips Hair Cuts $5- $6

I received an email from a reader letting me know that Great Clips at 86th and Ditch is doing haircuts for only $4.99. She also said that all the Indianapolis area Great Clips are going to be doing cuts at $5.99 starting this Friday 1/30/10.

I do not know how long this special will be going on - but that's a great deal if you need a hair cut.

Homemade Cleaning Supplies - Powdered Laundry Detergent

Since many of you at the Savvy Saving Class asked for this tonight - here it is!!!

A month ago I wrote a few articles regarding homemade laundry detergent. I have to admit a few years ago I really thought people that made their own laundry detergent needed to get a life! Why would you want to do this? Well, more recently I have realized that laundry detergent can be a BIG expense! So why not give it a try?

The first post that I wrote included a video by Trent at The Simple Dollar showing how to make your own liquid laundry detergent. It didn't look too hard, but the thought of a large bucket of liquid in my house with a new and not so steady walker did not seem safe (and possibly very messy) to me.

I decided to research the possibility of homemade powdered laundry detergent. The second post included a recipe for powdered laundry detergent from Felicia at Blulow. This seemed like a more reasonable approach for our lifestyle - so I decided to give it a try.

Okay, so I'm a month into my experiment. I spent about $7.00 on supplies and that will probably be enough for a very long time - I'll let you know! So far, I have been very pleased with the cleanliness of my laundry, I have had no trouble washing my whites with bleach and actually they look better than ever.

Here is what I used:

4 Bars - soap - (I hate to admit I actually used Irish Springs bar soap because I had some in the closet that would never get used otherwise - I'm not necessarily recommending this - but it seemed to work fine for me. However, the scent was a bit strong at first!)

3 Cups - 20 Mule Team Borax

3 Cups - Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda.

First I grated each bar of soap in the food processor one at a time. After the bar was grated I switched out the blade to the chopper blade and ran it through again with that to make a fine powder. Then I added around 1 cup of the Borax and 1 cup Soda and pulsed to mix. I put in a large bowl and repeated the process. At the end I did the extra soap and worked it into the rest.

This made a nice amount - about what you would get in a box of laundry detergent. I have found that 1 Coffee Scoop (about 1 TBS) is just the right amount for my washer. I have a regular top loader that runs a very large load. I think this will last me for many, many months. I put it in a plastic container and it is keeping very nicely.

What will I do differently next time?

1. I will do this outside on the back patio with one of those funny doctor looking paper respirator things over my nose! The soap makes a fine dust and I could not get the smell out of my head for about 3 days!

2. I still want to use up that Irish Spring soap! - but I think I will only use 1 bar of that and 3 bars of either Ivory or Pure and Natural (which is sold in a 3 pack for only $1 at the Dollar Tree) This should cut down on the strong scent - although I do not smell a strong scent on the clothes after they are washed. If I smell like Irish Spring - someone please tell me!

What did I do right?

1. I tried something new - and it worked!

2. The food processor is definitely the way to go! Made a nice fine powder - I have not had any trouble with residue on my clothing!

3. I made a BIG batch. I figured while I have the food processor out - why not keep going? It didn't really take very long to make a quadruple batch - about 45 minutes max.

My recommendations

1. If you have sensitive skin- use a fragrance free soap!

2. DO NOT use a food processor if you decide to use Fels Naptha laundry soap. I have heard many people say they ruined their food processor that way! That soap MUST be grated by hand.

3. Add the laundry soap first in the bottom of the washer with a bit of warm or hot water to let it dissolve and then you can turn the water to cold or whatever temperature you want - (doing this has worked very well for me!) Add the clothes after you have dissolved the soap powder - literally just takes about 30 seconds or so!

4. Don't be afraid to try something new! - It was really easy to do. And I am actually pleasantly surprised with the results. (I was not expecting nice white whites!)

5. MAKE SURE to tell your husband to only use 1 SCOOP!!! Thankfully I caught him after only 1 load! He had put in 4 scoops! He said 1 didn't seem like much - (and it doesn't seem like much) but my laundry is just as clean as before so I'm sticking with 1 scoop! By the way - this soap will not make bubbles like you might be used to - that's fine it will still work.

I will let you know the next time I make laundry soap and how long this batch lasted. I would love to hear from you if you give this a try. Next time I will take pictures and show you how I did it!

MLK Day Free Activities in the Indianapolis Area - 1/18/2010

There are quite a few Free Activities available in Indianapolis, on Monday, January 18, 2010, in celebration of Martin Luther King Day. Here is a list with links of the activities that I know about. If you know any that I missed please let me know!

White River State Park:

The following Park attractions will be free with canned food donation on MLK Day:

Bring 1 can of food per person for Gleaners Food Bank for free admission to each event that you want to attend. For example, if you want free Imax and free State Museum Tickets, bring 2 cans of food per person.

The Indianapolis Zoo: Visitors can enjoy a dolphin show at 10:30 a.m. or 2:30 p.m., walk the grounds (weather permitting) and then warm up by visiting the meerkats in the Deserts building and petting the sharks in the Oceans building.

Victory Field: Come by the home of the Indianapolis Indians between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and check out the Negro League Memorabilia display thanks to JJ Collectibles. Plus Rowdie, the Indians’ mascot, will stop by for autographs, too.

NCAA Hall of Champions: Join student-athletes from Butler University and IUPUI who are fulfilling their dream to participate in collegiate athletics, giving back to their community and preparing to graduate on Monday, January 18, 2010 at the NCAA Hall of Champions.
Doors open at 10 a.m. with activities beginning at the top of each hour. Student-athletes will read from their favorite book, tell their stories and share their experiences, sign autographs and take photos. Go toe-to-toe with the student-athletes in skill contests in the gym and enter a raffle to win NCAA merchandise.
Complimentary hot chocolate will be served.
Donate a canned-good and receive free admission. Donations support Gleaner’s Food Bank.

The Indiana State Museum: The museum will showcase films on the big screen in its Auditorium and Legacy Theatre focused on the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. and his “I Had A Dream” speech; plus enjoy Roshanda Hardin who returns for the 3^rd year with her band of poetry and music (drumming); also enjoy Civil War Soldier Sgt. Ransom Warfield, as well as Museum Minute carts and demonstrations throughout the galleries.

Getting Organized for 2010 - Handmade Basket Tags

The first of the year always gets me in the mood for getting organized around here. One area that has been driving me nuts is our toy organizer. It is in our living room because that is where the kids play but it needs to be organized and look nice when it is cleaned up - which it has not lately!

Here is what the organizer looked like last week! How embarrassing - what a mess!

I have been wanting to make some sort of tags to label the baskets so there would be no confusion as to where the toys went when it was time to clean up.

I decided to just use whatever supplies that I had on hand and not spend any money on these tags. And here is what I came up with and the finished organized unit with all the toys in their proper places! With the exception of a few Thomas trains that I took to the garage, all the same toys are in this space as were in the first messy picture - just without the mess!

Here is how I made the tags:

I had several cardboard boxes around from Christmas shipping and so I decided that that would make a good base for the tag. I would then cover it with brown paper - from the back of a used grocery sack and then make a decorative layer from black paper and print the label on the computer.

We've all been sick the past week and I didn't feel like doing much so I decided this was the perfect time to work on this project. So I got out my scrapbooking stuff on Saturday afternoon while everyone was napping and planted myself on the sofa - I turned on the PBS cooking and craft shows and had a good time making the tags!

First I decided what size the tags should be and made a pattern to trace. I then cut out all my cardboard bases.

I also cut out plain brown paper - the same size to cover the base. I have a small scrapbook paper cutter - so that helped me to get nice even edges - but scissors would work too.
I glued this to the base with a glue stick.

I then determined the size of the black decorative layer. I cut the ends with some scrapbooking scissors that I had on hand. To make the ends a mirror image of one another (like the black one in the picture above) cut one end and then turn the tag as if you were turning a page and cut the other side - so you will cut one side with the front facing you and the other side with the back facing you with the top always up - this will give you a mirror image if you are using a pattern. I then glued this piece to the bottom 2 layers.

Next, I determined the size of the printing label I wanted and made them on the computer. I just printed them and cut them smaller - but in the same pattern as the previous layer. I then glued this to the tag.

After that, I punched 4 holes to attach the tags. I put the holes through all the layers so that none of the layers would fall off.

I attached the labels to the bags with some leather type string that I had from a previous "Davy Crockett" project. Twine would have been really cute too!

The labels that I put on the door and the drawers I did not attach to a cardboard backing and I just attached them to the unit with scrapbooking mounting squares.

Of course, the first thing my 2 year old did the next day was to smear one of the tags - I then realized that they would have to be covered with laminate. I had some on hand so I cut some pieces and covered the labels. I would suggest that you cover the whole printed label before you attach it to the tag - that would look better than adding it later.

Also, if you have nice handwriting - which I do not - you could just write on the black label with a white permanent pen and it would be smear proof!

I few suggestions I would pass on from this project.

#1 - Cut the cardboard the same direction. One mistake I made was I did not cut all my cardboard in the same direction - I don't think it is noticeable - but I know it.

#2 Use basic colors that can be replaced if you need a new tag. I was tempted to use some cute scrapbook paper - but then I realized if one of the kids ruined a tag - or I needed a new label that this might be a problem. So that is why I stick with the plain brown and black.

#3 Laminate the tags or they will get ruined by sticky fingers!

#4 Put clothes back on your 2 year old's baby dolls before taking pictures of toys (see picture 2) - sorry!

I hope to have some more organizing projects for the new year!

NCAA Hall of Champions (10 a.m.-5 p.m.)

Get your hands on 23 sports and experience the heart and dedication it takes to be an NCAA student-athlete at the newly renovated NCAA Hall of Champions. There are several new things to see and do such as the kick-off theater video featuring prospective, current and former student-athletes. You can learn about all 23 of the NCAA sports through kiosks that give you up-to-the-minute rankings, sport-specific trivia, past champions and much more.

You will need to make time on your visit to play over a dozen interactive exhibits on the second floor including two simulators in which you will "virtually" experience five different sports. There is also an exhibit where a tennis ball shoots out at up to 100 m.p.h. demonstrating a collegiate tennis player's serve. There are educational components such as an interactive exhibit that demonstrates how student-athletes must budget their time. The popular 1930s-style gymnasium still remains, allowing visitors to shoot free throws. This college sports attraction offers something for everyone.

Beef and Lentil Slow Cooker Stew - Italian or Mexican Style - You Choose!

One of our favorite dinners is Beef and Lentil Slow Cooker Stew and you can make it either Italian style or Mexican style.

I originally got the recipe several years ago on the Weight Watchers website here. And the photo above is also from Weight Watchers.

I have adjusted the original recipe to suit our tastes and it has become a favorite. I also like that I can throw it in the crock pot in less than 5 minutes and it does not require pre-browning of the beef!

Recipe - Italian Style

1 small onion chopped (if you're in a rush you can omit)
2 cups frozen green beans or 1 can green beans (or in the summer I've used fresh too!)
1 pound beef cubes (I use what ever beef I get on sale and cube it myself)
1/2 tsp oregano or Italian seasoning, crushed
2 - 3 cans (14.5 oz each) diced tomatoes - undrained
1 cup dry lentils
2 - 3 heaping tablespoons of tomato paste
4 cups beef broth
4 carrots chopped
2 cups broccoli stems ** or bagged frozen broccoli
1-2 cups frozen or fresh corn
Whatever other veggie you like!
salt and pepper to taste

If your beef cubes are frozen - thaw them in the microwave first. Place all ingredients (except green beans and corn) in the crock pot. Cook on low 6 -7 hours. Add green beans and corn in for last hour or so to heat. (If you are using fresh green beans you might need a bit more time if you like them soft and not crisp)

To make this Mexican style substitute 1 or more of the cans of tomatoes with the salsa of your choice. If you use all salsa - which is how we like it - you can eliminate the onion as this is already in the salsa!

This is a VERY versatile recipe - you can't mess it up. Just add in what vegetables you like - the lentils make it so thick and yummy. In the summer I make this with fresh veggies from the garden or farm stand. I do not recommend adding potatoes because they tend to mush when cooked that long.

** When I make fresh broccoli, I chop and then steam the stems for a few minutes. Then I cool and put them in the freezer in bags with 2 cups each. My family does not like to eat the stems with steamed broccoli - but the make a nutritious filler in soup and cooking in the crock pot makes them soft instead of tough and woody like they usually are when steamed.

I just got this email with a great deal from Dawn - a Frugal Indy reader. Thanks Dawn!

The Meijer on East Washington had about 30+ bags of apples (near the the little room in the back where they check in produce) for $.10/lb. The bags were made up of Gala and Golden Delicious apples (and maybe others), somewhat on the small side. I bought about 15 lbs to make lots of applesauce! I've had one of those fancy apple peeler gizmos for several years ago, but never used it. I think I'll be digging that out of the cabinet.

Also, several months back, you had asked if Meijer marks stuff down in the evenings. My general grocery shopping time is 8-9 p.m.--the deli closes at 9 during the week and they do place several bags of deli meat on the counter for $1.50/lb (including some roast beef that runs $8 something a lb!).

One last Meijer deal is the mark down cooler for refrigerator products (ie. yogurt/cottage cheese). We go through a lot of yogurt in our house, and can usually pick up several days worth at half off (minus whatever coupons I have).

For those of you who overlook an "expensive" department store like Macy's - I would encourage you to take a look when they are having sales. I have often found high quality clothing items at Macy's (on sale) for the same price of a cheap quality item from Wal-mart or other type store.

I recently bought 4 long sleeved Carter's t-shirts for my toddler and they were priced less than the Carter's outlet price! Plus, with a coupon I had from Macy's ($15 off $40 purchase) I actually got them free with another item I was purchasing! I love Macy's coupons!

Today I'm off to do a little needed shopping before winter sets in for good! Before I go to the mall I always do a quick internet search for coupons for the stores that I plan to look at that day. I also am on the mailing lists of stores I like. One store (Christopher Banks) sent me an exclusive 40% off anything in the store coupon - only for their email list!

Of course I will probably make a quick stop at Goodwill before I hit the mall - you never know what you will find there too!

Thank you for praying for my Father-in-Law. He has returned to his home after his surgery and although he is tired - as would be expected - he is doing very well.

I'm sure he would appreciate if you still remembered him as it will take awhile to recover from this surgery. His surgeons were very pleased with his progress and he was even released earlier than most from the hospital! I believe his progress is a testimony to the Lord's working in his behalf in answer to the many prayers going out for him!

Homemade Cleaning Supplies - Window Cleaner

One of my son's favorite jobs is to clean the window on the sliding glass door and he also helps clean the bathroom mirror and sink. I have found that he tends to get a bit over zealous on the use of cleaner!

This concerned me because I figured that he was breathing in the fumes from the ammonia in the cleaner which would not be good for him. So I decided I did not want him to use the "Windex" any more and had to come up with something else.

I could have bought a "natural" cleaner - but they tend to be pricey! So, I found that there are may recipes online for making your own window cleaner so I experimented and like this one very much!

I double the recipe and it fills my old Windex bottle nicely - I don't even think my son knows the difference!

Here is the recipe!

Window Cleaner

2 Cups - Water
1/4 Cup - Vinegar
1/2 teaspoon - Liquid dish soap
2-3 drops - Blue food coloring (optional)

A few weeks ago in church we sang the song "Jesus, I Am Resting", my son who is 6 told me that it is his new favorite song and so we've been singing it during school time - I love to hear him sing it, it is so sweet! The (almost) 2 year old chimes in too with her own version of the words.

Knowing what to expect to be on sale currently could help with meal planning. According the list, we should expect- cranberries, apples, pomegranates, grapes, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, winter squash, broccoli, spinach, and lettuce to be on sale this month.

Castleton Goodwill - Girls Holiday Dresses

I stopped by the Castleton Goodwill (near the mall) yesterday and noticed they had several really pretty little girls holiday dresses! If you are looking for a holiday dress on a budget for your little girl - now is the time to keep a look out at Goodwill and the local consignment shops! Dresses at Goodwill are only $3.99.

I have noticed that the selection really varies from one Goodwill to another depending on location. I have found a good selection at the Southport location and at the Castleton location. There is also a new location on County Line Rd in Greenwood - near the Wal-mart.

When you shop at Goodwill - check to see if there are carts with new merchandise sitting around and check them! I found my son a practically new, perfect pair of warm winter boots for only $2.99 on a cart. These boots would not have lasted on the shelf - they were a great deal!

I stopped by Aldi (East Washington St - just west of Shadeland Ave.) and found some great deals!

3 - lbs apples in bag - $1.19 (that's only .40 a lb!)

Large Eggs $ .89 dozen

Of course Aldi is a great place for many of your staple items too like flour and sugar. Since I am pretty well stocked up and didn't need any meat, I was able to get most of the items we needed for the week for only $30.

Coats For Kids

If your children are in need of warm winter coats and if you cannot afford to purchase them, you will be interested in the "Coats for Kids" distribution going on tomorrow at the Indianapolis Fairgrounds from 8 am to 4 pm.

Here is some information from the WTHR website:

"This year, the Coats for Kids distribution will take place on Saturday, October 10th from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. in the Northwest Pavilion at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Any child who needs a coat will receive one that day. There is only one requirement: an adult must accompany all children and there is a limit of one coat per child. Bilingual (Spanish) volunteers will also be on site to assist non-English speaking families."

Tomorrow, October 6th is Community Tuesday at White River State Park. The Museums participate with really good discounts on admission!

Here are the ones I know about:

Indianapolis Zoo and Gardens - Admission $7.00

Eitlejorg Museum - Admission $4.00 for 18 and older - under 18 is free.

Indianapolis State Museum - Admission is 1/2 price ($3.50 for adults and $2.00 for children) and IMAX is $2.00 off.

I have been told that the NCAA Hall of Champions participates in this also but I do not know what their discount is for tomorrow.

Kmart - Summer Clothing at Rock Bottom Prices!

I stopped in Kmart yesterday to pick up some shin guards for my 6 year old soccer player. When I was in there I noticed quite a few clearance racks of clothing!

I love to buy clothing for the next year when it is on clearance - you can get better prices than Goodwill and it's new!

There was a ton of men's short sleeved shirts and swim trunks - for around $2 -$4 each! The boys swim trunks were $2.30 and the matching shirts $1.20 - you just can't beat that!

I shopped at the Super Kmart on East Washington Street - it is just west of the 465 Washington Street exit on the east side of Indianapolis.

Here is what I bought for $21.00. the full retail value was over $100.00 so it was around 80% off the regular price.

Upcoming Free Museum Days

There are several FREE or low cost Museum Days coming up in the near future. If you plan ahead you can see some great museums for free!

Here are a few regularly scheduled days in the Indianapolis area and also some special days that are coming up too!

Every Day! IMA - Indianapolis Museum of Art. General Admission to the Museum and Grounds is free every day! Go here for hours and more information.

September 26 - Smithsonian Museum Day. Free admission to thousands of museums throughout the country! Go here to print your admission card. Go here for participating museums. Some of the local museums include Conner Prairie and Indiana State Museum.

September 26 and October 31 (Saturday) 10 - 5 - Muncie Children's Museum. The museum is free the last Saturday of each month.

October 1 (Thursday) 4-8 pm, The Children's Museum of Indianapolis. Free Family Night is held every 1st Thursday from 4 - 8.

October 2 (Friday) 3 - 7, The Muncie Children's Museum. There is a Family Fun Night each first Friday of the month, admission is free from 3 -7 pm.

October 6 (Tuesday) 9am - 4 pm, The Indianapolis Zoo has Community Tuesdays with admission for only $7.00. This also gets you into the White River Gardens.

October 6 (Tuesday) 10am - 5pm. The Eitlejorg Museum also participates in Community Tuesdays. Admission is only $4.00 for Adults and Seniors ages 17 and under are FREE. This would be a great time for some of the larger homeschool families or co-ops to take a very cheap field trip!

This Weekend - Hoosier Outdoor Experience

This weekend there are a ton of free activities at Fort Harrison State Park!

Here is some great information from the DNR Website:

Mix a little mountain biking with hiking, fly fishing, archery, kayaking, target shooting, horseback riding, camping or just about any other outdoor activity you can imagine and you get the Hoosier Outdoor Experience.

Presented by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the Natural Resources Foundation, the free event is Sept. 26-27 at Fort Harrison State Park, a 1,700-acre oasis of woods, water and open green spaces on the outskirts of Indianapolis.

There’s never been an event like this in Indiana - two full days to wrap your arms around the great outdoors with hands on educational opportunities and skill-building activities focusing on natural resource conservation, outdoor ethics and responsibility.

This large-scale event offers outdoor experiences for everyone.

Parking, admission, activities, demonstrations and seminars are free to the public.

It's Apple Picking Time!

This weekend we took a ride over to Tuttle's Orchard to pick some apples. The kids had a great time picking and pulling the wagon. Also, they really enjoyed the play area - which is $2.00 for children 2 and over.

The farm market had a nice selection of veggies and fruit for sale and we enjoyed some great produce from their - including some really fresh corn. They pick it fresh every day!

We also enjoy visiting Anderson Orchard in the Pleasant View area. There is another location in Mooresville, IN. I noticed from their website that the Mooresville location is having an Apple Festival and Craft Fair this weekend - September 26 & 27.

I love to shoot photo's of the ceiling of glass located on the bottom floor of the museum. If you want to get a good shot of the beautiful glass, get close and turn your flash off so that you will not get a reflection.

I have seen several stores with deep discounts on clothing. Kmart Super center on East Washington had some items as low as .90 cents each. There were some clearance at the front of the store and some in the kids section. I also saw good markdowns at Wal-Mart and the Dollar General.

This really is the best time of the year to buy new summer clothing. I keep an under the bed box and just put the items in it for next year. There will most likely be blow out sales this weekend and the stores usually want most of it gone after Labor day.

By-the-way, I know that the photo with this has nothing to do with buying clothes - but I thought it was so funny I had to post it! However, the shorts he is wearing were bought at an end-of-the-year clearance 2 years ago and only cost about 15% of the original price!

CVS -- HOT DEAL

I stopped in at the CVS at Thompson Rd. and Arlington Rd. today and at the front of the store they had CVS plastic wrap 250 sq ft rolls for 90% off - they were only .38 cents a roll!

I don't know if any other CVS has this marked down - but what a great deal!

Kmart Super Double Coupon Sale - Update

I just received the weekly grocery ad for the Super Kmart on East Washington Street. They will be continuing the double coupon sale through Tuesday 9/8/09. They are also accepting 25 coupons per day. There is a minimum $25 purchase - before coupons.

Indianapolis Zoo - Community Tuesday 9/1/09 - $7.00 Admission

Tomorrow is Community Tuesday at the Indianapolis Zoo and admission is only $7.00. This is half off the regular adult admission.

If you've been wanting to see the zoo - the weather is predicted to be beautiful again tomorrow! So, pack a lunch and spend the day!

If you can't make it tomorrow there are 3 more Community Tuesdays planned for 2009: October 6, November 3, and December 1.

Also, you can visit Indianapolis area "Old National Bank" locations for $2.00 off coupons. I would doubt that you would be able combine that with the Community Tuesday pricing, but if you would like to go another day it could help save some $.

Kmart is once again having a Super Double Coupon Sale. Money Saving Mom is reporting that rumor has it that this may be the last one of 2009.

The rules look to be the same as the last sale. Only 10 coupons per day, 4 identical coupons and you must purchase $25 before coupons are taken off. Check with your store to make sure they are participating.

Tip - Maximize your Savings - Minimize your Time

When I teach a Savvy Savings class, I occasionally get a comment from someone who says that they don't have the time or the desire to make multiple shopping trips during the week. That they only want to go to one store. So, what can you do if this is your situation? Here are 2 solutions for you to consider.

Solution #1 - Only shop one store

If you are genuinely time pressed and have only enough time for 1 trip, I suggest that you take advantage of Wal-Mart's price matching policy. Wal-Mart will match any advertised competitor's price. You will need to bring the ad with you and it will need to be current. Wal-Mart will not match double coupons or % off sales. If you will look at all the current sales papers you can do pretty well this way, but you will spend more. Some Wal-Mart stores will also accept competitors coupons.

Solution #2 - Work your shopping into other errands or trips out.

At the beginning of the week (or even Saturday night - if you picked up the Saturday edition of the Sunday Star) find 15 minutes to take a look at the deals -especially those at CVS and Walgreens.

Make a list of the items you would like, pull the coupons and place the list for the store and the coupons in the envelope for that store. Place envelope in coupon box. (I keep an envelope for each store that I shop at in my coupon box.)

I always keep my coupon box in the car and that way if I can find a few minutes while we are on the way to do something else - I can make a quick stop in for the items I want. I find the best time for me to do this is when my hubby is along. I can dash in get the items and leave the kids in the car with him. It is much faster than me and the kids going in together.

If you work outside the home maybe you could find 15 minutes on lunch or going to or from work to make a quick stop. If you are prepared ahead of time with your list and coupons it is much faster.

The amount of money you can save by taking advantage of the weekly deals at CVS and Walgreens quickly adds up and is well worth the time to make a stop!

Update:
After I posted these tips, I thought of a few more things to add.

After the grocery ads come out on Thursday, I take a few minutes to look over them make my list and put it in the coupon box too. I do like to limit my grocery shopping to one store - unless there are deals too good to pass up.

If I find a week that there are really no items on sale that I need - I just make a quick stop to Aldi for the essentials.

Grandma's Zucchini Bread

I have the greatest Grandma in the world. She is 88, still lives on her own, her mind is still quick as anything - even if her knees aren't so quick anymore!

Any day that you stop by her house she will probably be baking something - for someone else or crocheting a gift for someone special. She's always ready to play a game with the grandchildren or great grandchildren and although I don't get to see her very much anymore because I live 10 hours away from her, her house is one of my favorite places to go.

At 88 she is still one of the best cooks I know and just loves to do special things for her family. She has been blessed with over 50 grandchildren, great grandchildren and even 1 great-great grandchild! I thank God for giving us such a wonderful grandma and giving her so many years with us!

One of Grandma's specialties is Zucchini bread. Her's is just the best ever. It is very moist and yummy! I thought you might like to have this wonderful recipe.

Grandma's Zucchini Bread

In the blender or food processor mix:

3 eggs
3 teaspoons vanilla
1 cup cooking oil
2 cups grated zucchini
2 cups sugar

Puree this in blender or food processor.

In another bowl add:

3 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
3 teaspoon cinnamon

Add wet mixture into dry ingredients, mix well by hand or with hand mixer. Divide into 2 loaf pans, Bake @ 350 for 55-60 minutes. If it browns quickly cover with foil at the end. Test with toothpick.

Note: Since you are going to puree the zucchini in the blender or food processor there is no need to remove the seeds. You can use the whole zucchini! Also, if you use the smaller foil loaf pans you can get 3 loafs from this recipe and the cooking time will be reduced by about 10 minutes.

Apple Picking Has Started at Anderson Orchard in Pleasantview - Our Bag of Apples .52 cents /lb

Today we took some time to go out to Anderson Orchard - one of our favorite places to visit. They have great apples, the best apple cider slushies, apple cobbler and corn dogs. Today we went to pick a few apples and get some apple cider slushies for the kids.

We decided to pick only a small bag of apples since it is the beginning of the picking season and the apples will improve as the season goes on. We chose the $4.00 1/2 peck bag. We filled our bag with a variety of the apples that are now ready.

When I got home I decided to weigh or apples and see if apple picking was economical as well as a fun time for us! We picked over 7 lbs of apples and that would make our apples cost only .52 cents a lb. What a great deal and we had a great time too.

After going to the orchard, we go around the corner to Southeastway park. The park has a wonderful shaded playground and swings. The kids had a great time! There are also nice picnic areas, grills for cooking out and pavilions at the park. There are also a lot of paths for walking.
